Ink inscription to first blank page, dated 1836. Further ink inscriptions to page 117. 18 plates. 2 folding maps. The first map is a plan of the town of Cheltenham in 1834, the second is a map of Cheltenham and the surrounding areas. Collated complete. With the prefaces to the first and second editions. In second edition of this historic guide to Cheltenham, Davies provides a history of the town and descriptions of its baths, pump rooms, public institutions, and fashionable amusements. He also gives a brief overview of the surrounding areas. The author Henry Davies (1804-1890) was a journalist, publisher and librarian at Cheltenham, who took an active part in the town"s political life, and edited the Cheltenham Looker-On for 57 years. He opened the Montpellier Library, a subscription library from which this book was published, and played a part in the founding of Cheltenham College in 1842. In a quarter cloth binding with paper boards. Externally very smart, with minimal wear to the extremities and the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean, with occasional handling marks. The first folding map has two large closed tears. Very Good Indeed.
