The Stray: A Cozy Fantasy of Magic and Found Family

Talia likes her magic small.

A fire lit without flint. A broom sweeping on its own. A little warmth against the cold. Nothing grand. Nothing dangerous. And, most importantly, nothing anyone needs to know about.

She likes her life the same way: quiet, controlled, and entirely her own.

Then a homeless boy follows her home.

Ren is thin, stubborn, far too curious, and determined to make himself useful. Talia agrees to let him stay for one night.

One night becomes another.

Then another.

Soon there are shared meals and reading lessons. A bed that wasn't there before. A broken wooden bird repaired with a little magic. And a boy who is beginning to look suspiciously less like a stray and more like family.

But Ren has a past he doesn't like talking about.

And when that past threatens the quiet life growing inside Talia's cottage, the woman who has spent years keeping her magic small may finally have a reason to stop.

Some magic is meant to make life easier. Some magic is meant to protect what matters.

The Stray is a warm, character-driven cozy fantasy about found family, a reluctant guardian, protective magic, and the unexpected ways two lonely people can become a family.

Jalál C. Hockett is a 22-year U.S. Army veteran writing cozy and grimdark fantasy from Texas. Two decades in the Army taught him about loyalty, moral complexity, and what people become under impossible pressure - lessons that shape everything he writes, whether that's the warmth of a Hearthfire in a sleepy village or a world with no chosen heroes and no mercy. The cozy line finds magic in quiet places: small communities, inherited gifts, and the stubborn persistence of ordinary goodness. The Grey Deep series is something else - raw, dark, and unblinking, inspired by George R.R. Martin and Joe Abercrombie. Both lines came from the same place: a soldier who's seen enough to know the world contains both. The Grey Deep began with a real family story - his ancestor Mary Glendenning, nine generations back. When he's not writing, he's pursuing a Master of Education at Liberty University.
