Synopsis:

Today, issues such as terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, environmental crimes, and clandestine labs are on virtually everyone’s agenda in the fire, law enforcement, and emergency medical services. These new issues compounded with our current responses to hazardous material incidents just complicate an already complex emergency response system. The rules for first responders have changed in the United States since September 11, 2001, and we must be ready to respond with the appropriate resources and personnel.

This book has been written for first responders and chemical management professionals to meet the challenges of today’s hazardous material responses. Presented in an easy-to-read format, Street SmartTM Chemistry provides new and experienced first responders with a resource guide that will enable them to upgrade their skills and knowledge of chemistry relative to their profession and public safety.

In providing appropriate mitigation, preparedness, and response to chemical, biological, and nuclear incidents, today’s First Responders must be prepared with the tools to manage the hazard and identify the vulnerability and risk to minimize losses within the community. This response guide and resource publication can be added to your growing library of references and learning materials for years to come, and works as a great review system during your hazardous material training and in-service drills.

Street SmartTM Chemistry is like no other emergency response guide. In a world concerned with weapons of mass destruction and attacks on our homeland, First Responders have an expanded role within the homeland security community. DuPont’s leadership has addressed these priorities by developing this book to prepare the First Responder for the challenges in this new world.

About the Author: Barry Lindley and Wayne Appleton are experts in the field of emergency response. Between them, they have over 32 years of experience and have responded to nearly 650 significant HAZMAT incidents. They consult with DuPont operating facilities, fire departments, and numerous emergency response groups in the area of hazardous chemistry, explosives, environmental monitoring, PPE selection, and hazardous materials handling safety.

Barry has accumulated extensive hazardous materials response experience while serving as a Corporate Integrated Emergency Response and Chemical Incident Response Team leader. He holds a Master of Science in Analytical Chemistry and is an expert on environmental analysis, air dispersal of hazardous materials and remediation methods. Barry has been a HAZMAT trainer since 1988 and is an instructor at both the West Virginia University Fire School and the Delaware State Fire School.

Wayne holds a doctorate in Physical Organic Chemistry and has experience in process development for organic chemicals, chemical analysis, and environmental chemistry. He is a recognized authority on environmental laws and regulations and is a frequent speaker at environmental conferences and before legislative committees. Wayne is also an educator who teaches chemistry and environmental science at Marshall University, the University of Charleston, and Mountain State University.
