How birds lift, steer, and power through the air
Discover the inner workings of flight—the muscles, bones, and feathers that make each wing stroke precise and powerful. This edition examines how anatomy supports every maneuver, from rising and turning to rapid stops in the air. In clear, accessible language, learn how a bird’s heart, lungs, and diaphragm collaborate with a complex system of muscles and tendons. See how the wing’s structure, from the humerus to the delicate “thumb,” enables rapid spreading, strong thrust, and subtle adjustments for steering. The book also highlights how air movement itself helps wings work, and why weight is concentrated near the body to keep flight efficient.
- How wing muscles attach to the skeleton and drive wing movement
- How feathers are arranged and angled to optimize flight
- How dissection reveals the real function of bones, muscles, and air sacs
- Why the anatomy of around-the-bird systems supports endurance, speed, and agility

Store description
