Beautiful binding and restoration. FINE copy. $750 "Rutherford described his theory of the atomic nucleus in 1927 in Structure of the Radioactive Atom and Origin of the α-rays (The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science 4 No. 22 pp. 580 605, September 1927). He wrote the following: The nucleus of a heavy atom has certain well defined regions in its structure. At the centre is a controlling charged nucleus of very small dimensions surrounded at a distance by a number of neutral satellites [in his view consisting of protons and electrons] describing quantum orbits controlled by the electric field from the central nucleus. In Rutherford's model, alpha particles are ejected when one of these satellites escapes and loses its electron(s). Wenner, History of Physics, page 401 "…) describes the puzzle relating to uranium scattering leading Gamow to his theory of alpha decay." Wenner, pg 477. [++] Also in this volume: J.J.
