Item description from seller

Clean, tight, unmarked; light edge wear to dust jacket with small chips and tears to corners of dj; not price clipped ($6.50); very minimal general wear; For 200 years (1670-1870), Hudson's Bay company were the "true and absolute Lordes and Proprietor" over the vast area drained by waters flowing into Hudson Bay. By Royal Charter, they were given a monopoly of "the sole and exclusive Trade and Commerce" over this territory. The privilege of exclusive trade carried with it the right of judicature. The administration of law and order did not present much of a problem until Lord Selkirk founded his colony in Red River. The General Quarterly Court sat in Assiniboia for 30 years (1839-1869). During that period, it was presided over by four Recorders - Adam Thom, Francis Godschall Johnson, John Bunn, and John Black. The author has written this book in the attempt to rescue these four men from the twilight of history.
