Fold out charts and maps intact, good black and white period in the field photos, etc. One of several coordinated Soils Engineering texts used at Fort Belvoir, this September 1961 "Student Reference" volume supports intermediate chapters of the E.022 engineering soils course. It summarizes soil classification systems, compaction theory, bearing-capacity calculations, and design of subgrades and base courses for roads and airfields. Tables and nomographs allow rapid field design using California Bearing Ratio (CBR) tests and other standard Army procedures. When issued, it complemented a student workbook and advance sheets that guided problem-solving and lab work, preparing engineer officers and NCOs for supervision of earthwork projects worldwide.
