This is the primary problem-solving workbook for the Engineer School’s Soils Engineering course E.022, used in conjunction with reference texts and advance sheets. The workbook contains structured exercises on soil classification, Atterberg limits, modified AASHO compaction tests, CBR testing, frost-susceptible soils, and the design of subgrades and base courses for heavy-duty roads and airfields. Students fill in data sheets, compute dry densities and optimum moisture contents, and interpret test curves with direct application to field construction. The material reflects the U.S. Army’s drive to standardize geotechnical design procedures across worldwide theaters just as large airfield and road projects were ramping up in Europe and Southeast Asia. Some staining and age spots on lower front cover and spine.
