The Student Writer: Editor and Critic

The Student Writer: Editor and Critic is an introduction to composition which aims to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the writing process facilitating the construction of coherent and critical arguments. The Student Writer offers a unique emphasis on revision and editing. The "Critique, Revise, and Edit" feature focuses on the need for writers to examine their drafts critically with their audience and purpose in mind and to revise accordingly.

The Student Writer takes a sequential approach by introducing readers to the value of critical reading, and then moves on to the construction and blending of various rhetorical patterns. Students are encouraged to apply the rhetorical patterns in argument, in research papers, in literary analyses, and more. With the help of The Student Writer readers will develop their own writing processes and become more creative, confident, and critical writers.

Barbara Clouse has taught all levels of college composition, first at Youngstown State University in northeastern Ohio and then at Slippery Rock University in western Pennsylvania. She has also written a number of composition texts. In addition to A Troubleshooting Guide for Writers, her books include The Student Writer: Editor and Critic, Jumpstart: A Workbook for Writers, Patterns for a Purpose: A Rhetorical Reader, and Transitions: From Reading to Writing, all written for McGraw-Hill. She has also developed Cornerstones: Readings for Writers, which is a short prose reader that is part of Primis, McGraw-Hill's custom publishing database. Barbara has also written Progressions with Readings and Conventions and Expectations: A Brief Handbook and Guide to Writing for Longman Publishers. A frequent presenter at national and regional conferences, Barbara often conducts workshops for writing teachers. McGraw-Hill authors represent the leading experts in their fields and are dedicated to improving the lives, careers, and interests of readers worldwide.

Peter Grevstad teaches Communications and General Education at Sheridan College Institute of Technology in Brampton, Ontario. His teaching career began in secondary schools in the Czech Republic, in the early 1990s. He has also taught at the post-secondary level in colleges and universities the Kingdom of Thailand, in Beijing PRC, and in Japan. For three years he was with the World University Service of Canada, in central Vietnam. His research interests include digital literacy, academic writing, Internet and research technologies in academic writing, and the immigrant experience in Canadian institutions. He has given numerous presentations at conferences and in-service events for teachers, both in Canada and overseas. He has edited for both scholarly and professional publications, and has contributed to ProQuest's CultureGrams series.
