About this title

Synopsis

The Student's Companion: Containing A Variety Of Poetry, &C. Selected From The Most Celebrated Authors; Designed To Improve Youth In Reading And Parsing The English Language; To Which Are Added Miscellaneous Questions, On The Sciences Usually Taught In American Schools, &C by Amos Jones Cook. This volume is an early 19th-century educational anthology compiled to enhance youth literacy and language comprehension. It gathers a broad selection of poetry and prose designed to cultivate reading skill, analytical thinking, and aesthetic appreciation, and couples these with sections of questions on grammar, geography, and the sciences typically taught in American schools. The collection includes hymns, fables, odes, biblical and classical excerpts, and didactic pieces on rhetoric, grammar, and style. It also features introductory commentary explaining poetry’s educational value, and a sequence of exercises across sections such as grammar, arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and geography, aimed at guiding teachers and students in the process of learning English and related disciplines. The work reflects an early American effort to integrate literature with formal instruction.
