About the Author
Renana Bartal is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Art History, Tel Aviv University. Before joining the Tel Aviv faculty, she was a member of the European Research Council-funded research group "Spectrum: Visual Translations of Jerusalem to Europe" at Hebrew University. Her articles have appeared in Gesta, Viator, Journal of Medieval History, and Cahiers de Civilisation Médiévale. She is the author of Gender, Piety and Production in Fourteenth Century Apocalypse Manuscripts (Ashgate/Routledge, 2016). She co-edited with Bianca Kühnel and Neta Bodner, Natural Materials of the Holy Land and the Visual Translation of Place, 500-1500 (Ashgate/Routledge, 2017) and with Hanna Vorholt, Between Jerusalem and Europe: Essays in Honour of Bianca Kühnel (Brill, 2015). She is currently working on a second book tentatively titled Illuminated Meditations: Image and Practice in the Oxford Meditationes Vitae Christi.
David M. Freidenreich is the Pulver Family Associate Professor of Jewish Studies at Colby College, where he serves as Director of the Jewish studies program and Associate Director of the Center for Small Town Jewish Life. As a member of the religious studies department, he teaches a wide range of courses on Judaism, Jewish history, and comparative religion. After receiving a B.A. from Brandeis University, he earned his Ph.D. at Columbia University and rabbinic ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary. His first book, Foreigners and Their Food: Constructing Otherness in Jewish, Christian, and Islamic Law (University of California Press, 2011), explores attitudes toward adherents of foreign religions expressed in ancient and medieval laws about sharing food. He is currently studying the ways Christians have used ideas about Jews to think about Muslims.
Margaret Goehring is Associate Professor of Art History at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, NM. She is a specialist in late medieval and renaissance Franco-Flemish manuscript illumination and painting. She has published several articles on Flemish and French manuscript painting, and is the author of Space, Place and Ornament: The Functions of Landscape in Medieval Manuscript Illumination (Brepols, 2013) as well as co-editor of Dressing the Part: Textiles as Propaganda in the Middle Ages (Brepols, 2015). Currently, she is researching the political function of courtly gardens and their representations, part of which will appear in Landscape and the Visual Hermeneutics of Place, 1500-1700, edited by Walter Melion and Karl Enenkel (Brill, 2020).
Louise Marshall is Senior Lecturer in Art History at the University of Sydney. Her primary topic of research is Italian Renaissance plague images, on which she has published extensively and is preparing a book. Other research interests include late medieval/Renaissance devotional imagery, the history of emotions, and early representations of purgatory. Her research has been supported by the Vittorio Branca International Center for the Study of Italian Culture at the Fondazione Cini, Venice; the Australian Research Council Centre for the History of Emotions; the Renaissance Society of America; and the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, UK. Recent publications include essays on the role of emotion in plague imagery ("Affected Bodies and Bodily Affect: Visualising Emotion in Renaissance Plague Images," in Performing Emotions in Early Europe, edited by Philippa Maddern et al., Brepols, 2018) and on angels and demons as agents of disease delivery ("God's Executioners: Angels, Devils and the Plague in Giovanni Sercambi's Illustrated Chronicle," in Disaster, Death and the Emotions in the Shadow of the Apocalypse, 1400-1700, edited by Jennifer Spinks and Charles Zika, Palgrave Studies in the History of Emotions, 2016).
Mati Meyer, Associate Professor at the Open University of Israel, has published multiple articles on Byzantine illuminated manuscripts, as well as a monograph, An Obscure Portrait: Imaging Women's Reality in Byzantine Art (Pindar Press, 2009). She has co-edited, with Katrin Kogman-Appel, Between Judaism and Christianity: Art Historical Essays in Honor of Elisheva (Elisabeth) Revel-Neher (Brill, 2009) and, with Stavroula Constantiou, a collected volume on emotions and gender in Byzantine culture (Palgrave-Macmillan, 2018). She is currently writing a monograph dealing with representations of the gendered female body in the Byzantine illuminated book.
