Studies in Local-Level Development-5 Social Change in Kerala: Insights from Micro-Level Studies

The Kerala Model of development is well known for the very high levels of human development indicators achieved by the State at low levels of per capita income. This book examines the extent to which various social groups in Kerala share this overall development experience of the State. Based on the analysis from village studies, the book puts together evidence that provides insights to the socio-economic processes through which this transformation has taken place during the past few decades. This volume has come out of a Project on Village Restudies in South India initiated by the Kerala Research Programme on Local Level Development.

K. N. Nair is currently Director, Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram. His recent publications include Cleaning Up Kerala (With R. Sridhar) and Housing in Kerala. He has done intensive research on agriculture, irrigation and water management, animal husbandry and rural Livelihoods and Institutions and Generation and Social Utilization of Knowledge.
Vineetha Menon is a Reader in Anthropology at Kannur University, Kerala, is currently Visiting Fellow in the Centre for Development Studies. Thiruvananthapuram.
