A Study of Hamlet

A Study Of Hamlet by John Conolly. This critical monograph treats Shakespeare's tragedy as a study in the mind rather than a simple dramatic plot. Conolly argues that Hamlet's madness is real and neither wholly feigned nor easily reducible to behavior on stage. He traces the prince's initial sorrow over his father's death and his mother's hasty remarriage, then follows the gradual development of a troubled mind through the ghost episode, Ophelia's distress, the graveyard scene, and the climactic return to action. The author weighs the traditional view that Hamlet merely pretends to be mad against evidence that suggests a genuine disturbance of reason, with episodic fits, doubts, and a fluctuating will to act. He engages with the testimony of critics from Johnson and Coleridge to Gervinus and Schlegel, and discusses the dramatic devices of the play, including the players and the murder plot. The study culminates in a reading of the final act as the culmination of Hamlet's struggle with memory, duty, and death. It also considers Ophelia's madness and death as consequences of Hamlet's fracture and the corrosive court politics that surround them.
