Synopsis

Ernest Amory Codman proposed his "End Results" thesis in 1910. A crusader and independent thinker, Codman believed that physicians should track the outcomes of their treatment of patients and make this information public. To support his theory, Codman made public the end results of his own hospital in a privately published book, A Study in Hospital Efficiency. Now a classic book, A Study in Hospital Efficiency explains Codman's end results system in which "an effort is made to follow up each patient... long enough to determine whether treatment given less permanently relieved the condition or symptoms complained of."
