Black crayon with white heightening on bluish wove paper, 5 3/16 x4 5/8 inches (132 x 118 mm), the full sheet. Some minor dampstain in the top sheet quadrant, does not effect the integrity of the drawing. Adhered to a sheet of non-archival paper at the top and bottom sheet edges. With erroneous inscriptions in in pencil on the lower margin of the matrix. Otherwise in good condition. This mid-19th-century study depicts a member of the Life Guards, the senior regiment of the British Household Cavalry. The artist captures the soldier in a formal equestrian pose, emphasizing the technical precision of the regimental uniform. Key identifying features include the 1842-pattern metal helmet with its distinctive plume and ornate comb, alongside the heavy tunic adorned with epaulettes and a prominent cross-belt. The horse is rendered in a high-stepping gait, equipped with a traditional military saddle and a shabraque. A long cavalry saber hangs at the rider's side, completing the assembly. A lovely study for a larger, finished work.
