How to Study and Teaching How to Study

How to Study and Teaching How to Study is a practical and thoughtful guide to one of education’s most neglected arts: learning how to learn. Frank M. McMurry argues that pupils are too often expected to study without ever being shown what real study involves. The result is wasted effort, weak judgment, poor memory, and a dependence on teachers that prevents genuine intellectual growth. Written for teachers, parents, and serious students, this book examines study as an active process. McMurry explores how learners form purposes, select important ideas, organize knowledge, test the worth of statements, memorize effectively, apply what they know, remain open-minded, and develop individuality. His approach is not mechanical cramming, but disciplined thinking. Although first published in the early twentieth century, the book still speaks clearly to modern concerns about independent learning, critical thinking, and classroom method. It asks a question that remains urgent: how can students be taught not merely to receive information, but to use their minds well? Clear, systematic, and humane, How to Study and Teaching How to Study offers a durable philosophy of education for anyone interested in better teaching, better learning, and the lifelong cultivation of intelligent study habits.
