The Handbook is an authoritative and accessible introduction to all aspects of the two countries, rooted in a broad historical account of the development of the state and vividly written by leading Sudanese, South Sudanese and international specialists. The book includes numerous purpose-drawn maps, a glossary of key terms, capsule biographies of key figures, a chronology and a bibliography.

About the Author

John Ryle is Legrand Ramsey Professor of Anthropology at Bard College, New York, and Director of the Rift Valley Institute; Justin Willis is Professor in History at Durham University; Suliman Baldo is Director of the Africa Program at the International Center for Transitional Justice in New York; Jok Madut Jok is Professor of History at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.
