Sugarfree Quick & Easy: A Cookbook Based on the Glycemic Index

The second cookbook in Bahan's series of sugar free cookbooks, Sugarfree Quick & Easy! follows the "Sugar Busters! " (tm) diet and includes a description of the glycemic index and a description of how blood sugar effects weight loss. With the success of Sugarfree New Orleans, Bahan's first book, the one comment she kept hearing repeatedly from readers was, "What can I do if I really don't have time to cook?" From that simple comment sprang the idea for Sugarfree Quick & Easy! All of the recipes can be prepared in under twenty minutes, and helpful hints are added throughout the book to simplify your sugar-free lifestyle.

Author Deanie Comeaux Bahan started her first book Sugarfree New Orleans by reworking favorite New Orleans recipes for her husband Mark, a diabetic heart patient, who had been hospitalized. His blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides were sky high.

"If you take care of the sugar," Deanie told her husband, "Your body can take care of the fat." Skeptical about Deanie's sugar-free idea, he agreed to try. Four weeks later Mark returned to the hospital for blood work. His blood sugar dropped from 500+ to 98; his cholesterol once 400+ was now 144; and triglycerides went from over 700 to 72. "It worked!"

Neither doctor nor nutritionist, Deanie Comeaux Bahan set out to compile her recipes in a book based on the most recent research she could find about the Glycemic Index. (The body's glycemic response is the rate at which it converts foods to blood sugar.) "I wanted to help everyone remain true to their sugar free diets, which is often hard with today's busy schedules," the new author said. Most of the recipes can be modified for low-fat diets as well.

Since the initial release of Sugarfree New Orleans Deanie has been getting lots of positive feedback from her readers. They raved about the recipes in Sugarfree New Orleans but many readers expressed that they often didn't have a lot of time to cook any meals, let alone one that was sugar free. In response to this plea Deanie sat down to pen Sugarfree Quick & Easy!

Today Deanie's husband is proud of his accomplishments and of hers for she is the successful author of two cookbooks that can't be printed fast enough: Sugarfree New Orleans: A Cookbook Based on the Glycemic Index (1997), now in its fourth printing and Sugarfree Quick and Easy! which has just been released.
