Suicide occurs, he says, when the person experiencing the psychache deems the pain unbearable, suicide having to do with differences in individual thresholds for enduring psychological pain. Other concepts that bear Shneidman's imprint include suicidology, psychological autopsy, postvention, subintentional death, and postself. In the language of Suicide as Psychache, the growing numbers of people committing suicide in the United States give testimony to the growing prevalence of psychache in the U. S. population. About the Author: Edwin S. Shneidman, Ph.D. is Professor of Thanatology Emeritus at the University of California at Los Angeles School of Medicine. In the 1950'she was co-founder and co-director of the Los Angeles Suicide Prevention Center and then, in the 1960's, Chief of the Center for the Study of Suicide Prevention at the National Institute of Mental Health (in Bethesda). He has been Visiting Professor at Harvard and at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev (in Beersheva); Research Associate at the Massachusetts General Hospital and also at the Karolinska Hospital (Stockholm); and a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (at Stanford). He was the founder, in 1968, and the first president of the American Association of Suicidology. He is the author of Deaths of Man (nominated for a National Book Award in Science), Voices of Death, and Definition of Suicide, and editor or co-editor of a dozen books on death and suicide. He is the recipient of the American Psychological Association Award for Distinguished Professional Contribution to Public Service.
