About this Item
Wonderful hand-colored metamorphic images, eight in all, which look like one type of character facing one way, and a very different character, somtimes the opposite, essentially, when flipped around. Scarce, with only known other copy at the BNF, as one might expect, and no indication that this copy has hand-coloring, and additionally, this copy is smaller, meaning it was cut more tightly. N.d., circa 1820. Oblong, measuring 41.5 cm wide, 27 cm tall. So in one direction, you have a Russian officer, but when you flip it, you have an Armenian. A flower girl one way becomes an Amazon, the other. A Spaniard transforms into a coal merchant. The caricatures are all vivid and well-rendered, and likely to tickle even without the captioning, since a few of the identifications, such as Pere Radis and Madame Radis, are obscure to us. The print is canvas backed, yet heavily soiled. We would note that the soiling is susceptible to cleaning up to a fair degree with a simple eraser, if one wishes to make the effort. Also, the print has a lot of crinkling, cracking, edge closed tearing, and veins of blistering between the paper and the canvas. Still, the canvas does provide some substantiality which helps preserve the integrity of the print. Seller Inventory # 007877

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
