Front board is detached; rear joint is tender; contents clean and textblock is solid; previous owner name and label on the title page for Asa Redington, Augusta. According to a National Parks Service report on the Redington House in Waterville, ME, "Asa Redington was born in 1761 in Boxford, Massachusetts and enlisted in the Continental Army in June, 1778. After several short tours of duty he enlisted finally for three years in February, 1781. He was in the skirmish at King's Bridge and at the siege of Yorktown. Subsequently he served as corporal in the Commander-in-Chief s Guard, an elite mounted unit, and was: one of twelve men chosen to deliver Washington's personal papers and baggage to Mount Vernon in the fall of 1783. He was discharged at West Point in December of that year." We cannot say for sure if this is the same Asa Redington or it perhaps it was a son, Asa Redington, Jr. who was a Maine State Treasurer from 1835-7. It remains an interesting association.
