At age 16 he operates an antiaircraft cannon, then survives the horrors of the Russian front and ends up in a POW camp. In the post-war depression he works his way through premedical school as an embalmer. A few weeks after graduation from medical school he emigrates to Canada on a small freighter with 10 dollars in his pocket. Against many odds he succeeds in an unconventional medical career in three different countries.
