Earl Brassey's "The Sunbeam." R.Y.S Voyages and Experiences In Many Waters" Sunbeam RYS was a british luxury yacht. Built for Thomas Brassey in Seacombe, it was designed by St Clare Byrne, who specialised in the design of luxury vessels. The boat itself became famous due to the publication of Annie Brassey book entitled, 'A Voyage in the Sunbeam, our Home on the Ocean for Eleven Months', which charted the boats travels. Annie Brassey later died aboard the Sunbeam died during a voyage from Australia, and was buried at sea. This particular work is by the boats owner Thomas Brassey, and once again discusses sea voyages, and the author experience of the water. Brassey, born in 1836, was a Earl as well as a Liberal politician. Passionate about maritime he was the founder of The Naval Annual, a volume comprised of expansive information of naval history. Due to these publications, documenting the boat voyages, and the passion of its two owners, Sunbeam became an object of public interest and fascination. The boat was also a part of The Royal Yacht Squadron, or RYS. A prestigious yacht club, based in the Isle of White, to be member is considered a privilege. Member yachts add to suffix 'RYS' to their name, and are allowed to fly the flag of the Royal Navy. It originated in 1815, as a group of 42 men with an interest in yachting. The organisation has recently allowed female members, and is perhaps the most recognised group of this type in the world. Illustrated plates throughout. Collated, complete.
