Chuck Cluck, an alien chicken from outer space adopted by an Earth chicken, makes trouble in the henhouse but saves the day when a villainous rat steals eggs intended for hatching

Kindergarten-Grade 3-- A book written by a sixth grade boy, co-authored with his mother. Super Cluck is a chicken from outer space, accidently left on Earth as an egg, and adopted by the kind Mrs. Cluck. Soon after he hatches it becomes evident that Chuck Cluck has some unusual attributes--his large size, amazing strength, and ability to fly. Children attracted to "Super Hero" characters will delight in Super Cluck's story. Lloyd's bright watercolor-and-pen illustrations are often more detailed than the usual beginning-to-read fare; many of the chicken coop scenes are delightful. Readers will be awaiting the further adventures of this chick. Meanwhile, Robert and Super Cluck can serve as role models for aspiring young authors. --Gale W. Sherman, Pocatello Public Library, ID

Long after his spaceship has departed, Chuck Cluck hatches on earth. Mrs. Cluck raises Chuck with her own chicks, but everyone notices he is different--Chuck is bigger, hungrier and stronger. When the alien bungles about the coop, the other chicks make fun of him. Once Chuck pecks a hole so deep five chicks fall into it; another time he sneezes so hard that he blows feathers off the chickens. Chuck feels hopeless until the day that a crafty rat robs the chicken coop, and Chuck is able to rescue 13 chicks because he can fly. A happy Chuck earns the name Super Cluck and learns to appreciate his unique characteristics. Bursting with energy, Lloyd's bright, detailed illustrations lend humor and verve to this I Can Read book. Ages 5-8.
