The Sureness of Horses (Paperback or Softback)

"Lyrical, compelling, absolutely riveting. Arnold had me hooked from page one." — Sara Houghteling, Fulbright Fellow, Winner of the 2016 Narrative Prize
"It's the rare novelist who can enhance a narrative and move a reader with the use of poems that amplify the story's arc. Arnold is one of those very fortunate writers." — Julia Glass, author of the National Book Award-winning Three Junes
"Arnold moves us through the subtlety and texture of poetry, love, parenting, growing older, and yes, the uncertainty of our own sureness." — Persis Karim, San Francisco State University
When divorced Wade Middleton meets wealthy Diana Buchanan — a beautiful horsewoman newly relocated to Palo Alto, California — he is drawn into a world of fox-hunting, old money, and unspoken social rules as intricate as they are unforgiving. What begins as an irresistible attraction becomes a test of loyalty, desire, and moral courage as the distance between their worlds grows harder to ignore.
Woven throughout with the poetry of Jane Hirshfield, The Sureness of Horses is a rare novel — one that moves with the precision of literary fiction and the momentum of a love story. A book about belonging, class, and the quiet sureness we search for in other people.
