The Surgeon's Stage: A History of the Operating Room

The Surgeon's Stage: A History of the Operating Room by Christoph Mörgeli is a richly illustrated exploration of the surgical theater’s evolution from the 18th century to the modern era. Drawing from historical documents, photographs, and medical artifacts, the book traces how operating rooms transformed from open, rudimentary spaces—often crowded with onlookers—into highly specialized, sterile environments. Mörgeli, a medical historian and curator, examines the technological innovations, evolving surgical techniques, and changing perceptions of hygiene and patient care that shaped these spaces. The work also highlights the interplay between architecture, medicine, and social attitudes toward surgery and suffering. With its museum-quality visuals and scholarly insights, this book offers a compelling journey through the dramatic transformation of the operating room and the medical profession itself.
