Synopsis
In its first edition, Surgery of the Colon, Rectum and Anus established itself firmly as the gold standard definitive resource in the field. Critically acclaimed as a masterwork, John Golighers reference work of the same name finally had a worthy successor. Now, for the second edition, Michael Keighley and Norman Williams have completed the huge task of revising and updating their speciality defining work, to reflect thesubstantial changes in colorectal surgery which have occurred since the publication of the first edition.
As with the first edition, the authors have written the vast majority of the book themselves, maintaining the consistent style and personal approach which proved so popular. As before, however, they have sought outside contributions for specialised fields outside of their personal experience: in particular Steven Wexner has contributed all the laparoscopic sections, Susan Galandiuk provides a new chapter on injuries to the colon and rectum and Lester Gottesman conveys some of his vast experience on sexually transmitted disease.
Over 200 new figures have been added, reflecting the technical changes which have taken place, and hundreds of new references added, keeping the book as the most exhaustive reference work available. Surgery of the Anus Rectum and Colonremains the ultimate reference work in the field. No colorectal surgeon should be without it.
Areas of major change include:The genetics of colorectal cancer a new chapter
Restorative proctocolectomy (especially pouch salvage procedures) Medical management of anal fissure
New treatments for bowel incontinenceMultidisciplinary management of constipation (outlet obstruction, rectocele, and techniques for improving impaired evacuation)
Management of anal cancer and intraepithelial neoplasiaThe role of laparoscopy in colorectal disease now integrated into the relevant parts of the text
Polyposis syndromesAdjuvant therapy in colon cancer
Surgical management of recurrent rectal cancerManagement of hepatic metastases
Biology and natural history of cancerPhysiological impact of anal fissure surgery
Inflammatory bowel disease its medical treatment and aetiopathologyThe impact of urogynaecological procedures and conditions on colorectal practice
Review
"The third edition has undergone more extensive revision with the refinement and incorporation of chapters to reduce any duplication. There are some new chapters such as that on screening for colorectal cancer.
Seeing the third edition is like meeting a long lost friend again - a most rewarding and enjoyable experience.
I cannot recommend this text highly enough. The authors suggest that in future it may be published online with more proactive editing to keep it at the cutting edge. A must have!"
Colorectal Disease - March 2008
REVIEW OF LAST EDITION:
"For colon and rectum surgeons, it will become a classic surpassing in depth, breadth, and style all other currently available textbooks. Although the facts may slowly change with the advance of science, the wisdom and experience captured here will keep me returning to this book for counsel for many years to come." -- NEJM
"Inevitably such a large text will be perceived as a reference book, but realistically these volumes are a must for every practicing coloproctologist." -- British Journal of Surgery
BMA Book Awards 2008 - Highly Commended
"It remains the authoritative text on colorectal diseases: the material is new and not just a simple update of the previous edition. The book production generally good, but I expected colour illustrations and photos, and colour coding for titles and tables etc to make them more readable. Moreover, in this day and age, I expected a CDROM with the book, containing those photos which did not make the book. This notwithstanding, however, every GI surgeon must have this set of books in their collection."
