Surrounded: Democracy, Free Markets and Other Entrapments of New Colonialism

This book is an ethnography of new colonialism: the informal, ignorable, subtle and seemingly benevolent ways through which new colonialism manifests: Unlike colonialism of the past, this new manifestation - running riot after the collapse of USSR - has been tactfully depoliticised Institutions such as the WB, IMF, WWF, banks, mining giants, telecoms, and many others have surrounded the African continent. Chanting free markets and democracy, they have ruined entire populations - and will resort to deadly violence in the name of democracy.

"this is a compendium of radical political economy, and political analysis of the continent of the highest order. - Leo Zeilig, author, The Walter Rodney Story: A Revolutionary of our Time.

"Serunkuma's writing challenges us to see that colonialism only transformed with their substance still intact in thought and practice: They simply became more technical and depoliticised. Thus, he asks us to see the double-standards of the Western world, and calls for meaningful, unorthodox action"- Lonzen Rugira, Managing Editor, Pan African Review
