A Survey of the Woman Problem

A Survey Of The Woman Problem by Rosa Mayreder. This collection of essays and translations analyzes the social and psychological dimensions of femininity and the status of women in modern civilization. Mayreder critiques essentialist definitions of womanliness and argues for unlimited individuality beyond traditional roles. She identifies three intertwined roots of the women’s movement—economic, social, and ethical-psychological—and contends that true emancipation requires more than economic reform; it requires redefining feminine identity and expanding opportunities for self-development while respecting motherhood and other traditional duties. The book surveys debates on motherhood and culture, the tyranny of norms, masculine ideals, and the figure of the gentlewoman, drawing on philosophy, science, and literature to show that sex differences are not fixed but vary with culture and circumstance. Mayreder champions a normative value for individuality and attacks both averages and rigid ideals. She urges social reforms that enable women to pursue intellectual and cultural life alongside, or in harmony with, motherhood, heralding a feminist critique that remains influential in gender studies.
