Survival French: A Crash Course: Speaking French in Provence (Practical Language Learning)

Learning French doesn’t have to mean memorizing thousands of words or struggling through complicated grammar rules. The expanded and revised Second Edition of Survival French: A Crash Course takes a more practical approach: learn a small core of useful French, practice it until it becomes familiar, and start using it in real situations.

Instead of overwhelming you with vocabulary, this book concentrates on the words, phrases, and sentence patterns you are most likely to need. Short dialogues, pronunciation practice, repetition, and everyday situations help turn that limited vocabulary into something you can actually use.

And rather than learning French in a generic classroom, you’ll travel through Provence along the way—visiting markets, cafés, villages, the Pont du Gard, the Palais des Papes, and Les Baux-de-Provence.

This expanded Second Edition includes:

• Six days of progressive French practice, from greetings and introductions to travel, restaurants, shopping, family conversations, emergencies, and everyday plans.
• A greatly expanded pronunciation section explaining French vowels, nasal sounds, silent letters, liaison, rhythm, and how words flow together in real speech.
• What French really sounds like in conversation, including common forms such as J’sais pas, T’as…, J’suis…, and Y a…, so spoken French is less surprising when you hear it.
• Numbers, prices, time, dates, and phone numbers, including the famously unusual French 70s, 80s, and 90s.
• Practical travel French for directions, transportation, train times, hotels, reservations, restaurants, shopping, and paying.
• Emergency French for asking for help, finding a doctor or pharmacy, calling emergency services, and dealing with medical situations.
• Natural mini-dialogues and short texts that recycle vocabulary while gradually becoming more realistic.
• Essential grammar without heavy theory, including gender, plurals, articles, questions, negatives, possessives, and the verb patterns beginners need most.
• French verbs for “Now, Next, and Before”, focusing on the present, the easy aller + infinitive future, and the useful passé composé.
• 50 useful French-English cognates that show how much French vocabulary English speakers already recognize.
• A final “25 Sentences to Remember” section containing the phrases worth keeping ready when everything else escapes you.

The goal is not perfect French. It is to build enough language reflexes that you can greet someone, ask a question, understand an answer, order a meal, find your way, make a reservation, solve a problem, and keep a conversation moving.

Whether you are traveling to France, meeting a French-speaking family, returning to a language you studied years ago, or simply want a manageable way to begin, Survival French: A Crash Course — Second Edition gives you a practical foundation you can expand for years to come.

Learn a little. Use it often. Keep speaking.
