Survival Identity: The Hidden Patterns Running Your Work, Leadership, and Life

You didn't lose your ambition. You didn't lose your values. But somewhere along the way, you lost yourself, and you're not sure how it happened.

Maybe it was the layoff that stripped away the title you'd built your identity around. The divorce that ended the version of you that existed inside that relationship. The health diagnosis that rewrote your future. The leadership role that required you to become someone you no longer recognize. The career that succeeded - and somehow still left you feeling hollow.

This isn't a motivation problem. It is a Survival Identity problem.

A Survival Identity is the version of yourself you constructed to navigate pressure, uncertainty, and institutional demands. It kept you safe. It earned you success. It made you indispensable. But it was built for a world that no longer exists - and now it's running your life on autopilot, making decisions you didn't consciously choose, costing you more than you realize.

Drawing on two decades of executive coaching, organizational consulting with Fortune 100 companies, and doctoral research in human and organizational change, Dr. Amy Chiang names the experience millions of people have lived through but never had language for. Survival Identity introduces the FORMA(R) methodology - a five-phase map for moving through identity transition, grounded in adult learning theory, polyvagal research, and the somatic work that makes change actually hold.

Inside, you'll learn to:

• Recognize the five Survival Identity archetypes and identify which one is running your life
• Understand why insight alone doesn't produce change - and what does
• Move through career transitions, leadership shifts, and life disruptions with clarity instead of reactivity
• Read the same patterns operating in your team, your organization, and the culture you're trying to lead
• Build the conditions that sustain who you're becoming, not just who you've been

This book is for the executive whose promotion outpaced her identity. The leader navigating a merger that has stalled. The professional who survived the layoff and isn't sure who they are without the title. The high-performer who built a life around achievement and finally noticed the cost. The change you're trying to make is not at the surface. It is at the level of who you take yourself to be.

The pattern underneath your behavior has a name. Once you see it, you can change it.
