Every year the Imperium administers the Magi test as part of the ritual of becoming an adult at 18. All new Magi are then sent to the Academy where they learn the magic they need to defend the Imperium. The academy itself can be dangerous for those without the will and determination to survive. Young recruits die every year.

Jack always thought he would be a legionnaire. He never expected to become a Magi, let alone a War Magi, one of the magical forces that help defend the Imperium against internal and external threats. Will he survive the trials that await him? Will he live to make it through the academy and become a War Magi in truth? Or will he be just another stepping stone for others?
