Syllabus Of A Course Of Lectures On Chemistry To Be Delivered. 1864 And 1865 Signed B.C.B by Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie. These lectures, to be delivered in the Museum during Michaelmas and Hilary Terms of 1864 and 1865, outline a comprehensive program for teaching chemistry at university level. The syllabus covers the discovery and study of oxygen, methods of its preparation, and the historical experiments that established its properties, followed by investigations into water, atmospheric composition, ammonia, and carbon compounds. The curriculum includes discussions of gas densities, the constitution of gases, and the dynamic theory of gases, with attention to experimental procedures, qualitative and quantitative analyses, and the use of early analytical methods. The course presents systems of chemical nomenclature and the theory of chemical equivalents, listing key elements and their compounds, including hydrogen, chlorine, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, and halogens. The lectures are described as free to university members, with a laboratory component and a separate course in chemical analysis in the Summer term, reflecting the educational aims of 19th-century science at Oxford. The material also provides a 'Formule of the Molecular Weights' table for common substances.
