Syphilis and Local Contagious Disorders

Syphilis And Local Contagious Disorders by Berkeley Hill. This 1869 treatise surveys venereal diseases, combining a thorough historical overview with a systematic description of syphilis, chancre, gonorrhea, and related disorders, and introduces treatment and prevention topics in later sections. The work is structured around an introductory history and divisions on syphilis, chancre, gonorrhea, and accessory venereal disorders, with broader context in later material. It emphasizes the distinction between local contagious ulcers (chancre) and constitutional syphilis, engages the debate between unicist and dualist theories of causation, and generally supports a dualist view that local ulcers are distinct from true syphilis. It analyzes modes of contagion (sexual contact, secretions, inoculation experiments) and incubation periods, inheritance, and initial diagnostic signs. The text covers authorities cited and the role of inoculation experiments, framing implications for treatment and public health. It also outlines prognosis, relapse patterns, and historical approaches to therapy and prevention.
