Syrian Home Life

“Syrian Home Life” by Isaac Riley This ethnographic narrative surveys daily life in 19th?century Syria through the eyes of American missionaries and observers. Compiled from letters, notes, and chapters by Rev. Isaac Riley, the work details Syrian domestic life across chapters on the house, dress, children, schools, weddings, punishments, the pest life, beasts, priests, tolerance, and the Druzes, Nusairiyeh, and Christians. It presents how homes are built, how people live, and how gender roles, education, religion, and social custom intersect with politics under Ottoman rule and wartime upheavals. The account emphasizes the transformative influence of Christian missions, especially education for girls, and the ways in which native communities respond to, resist, or adapt to external religious messages. Across vivid scenes of everyday practice and ritual, the book offers a detailed portrait of life, belief, and struggle in the Levant and its surrounding communities.
