The System We Never Built (Paperback or Softback)

For years, Kim believed the mental health system would eventually catch her son before he fell too far.

It never did.

What followed was a devastating cycle familiar to millions of families navigating severe mental illness in America: psychiatric crises, emergency room visits, homelessness, incarceration, fragmented care, exhausted caregivers, and systems that responded only after collapse had already occurred.

In The System We Never Built, Kim shares the deeply personal story of her son Jonathan's journey through untreated psychosis and the criminal justice system while exposing a painful national reality: America never created a true continuum of care for people living with severe mental illness.

Blending memoir, research, policy analysis, and lived experience, this powerful book examines:

• why severe mental illness so often leads to jail instead of treatment
• how fragmented systems force families into impossible situations
• the myths that continue to shape public perception and public policy
• the devastating gaps between hospitals, courts, housing, and crisis care
• why caregivers are often left carrying responsibilities systems were meant to hold
• what communities can do to build compassionate, evidence-based alternatives

Throughout the book, Kim challenges the assumption that the system is merely "broken." Her argument is far more urgent: for many people living with severe mental illness, a real system was never fully built at all.

At once heartbreaking and hopeful, The System We Never Built is both a mother's story and a call to action... urging communities, policymakers, healthcare leaders, and families to imagine something better than crisis, criminalization, and survival.

People in crisis need care... not cuffs.
