In his Autobiography, Gross reflected on the creation of his System of Surgery: "One of the chief reasons that prompted my move to Philadelphia was to escape a large and burdensome family practice in Louisville and to focus on writing an elaborate System of Surgery, for which I lacked sufficient time in Kentucky. I had long contemplated such a work, and I knew that without changing my residence, I would never be able to fulfill an ambition so deeply intertwined with my professional goals. I resolved to make it, if possible, the most elaborate if not the most complete treatise in the English language."
