A System of Temporal Retribution, Vindicated by Various Considerations Drawn from Scripture and Observtion

A System Of Temporal Retribution, Vindicated By Various Considerations Drawn From Scripture And Observtion by William Thomas Wishart presents a thorough theological argument that the divine administration includes a present system of temporal retribution operating through conscience, society, and human laws. Wishart contends that both Old and New Testaments testify to a continuous plan of righteous reward and punishment, and he marshals biblical narratives—from Cain's exile to Judas's remorse, from Israel's wilderness punishments to Babylon's fall—to illustrate how sins invite earthly chastisement. The work is organized into a sequence of chapters arguing that present experience—internal feeling of conscience, public opinion, and the penalties of law—together with the looming judgment of the future state, demonstrate a unified, consistent providence. The author aims to rectify misunderstandings about providence, arguing for a coherent link between present life and the final judgment, and to show that “Be sure your sin will find you out” is a guiding scripture for Christian ethics.
