A System of Theology, Tr. With an Intr. and Notes by C.W. Russell

A System Of Theology, Tr. With An Intr. And Notes By C.W. Russell by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibnitz is an English translation of Leibnitz's Systema Theologicum, accompanied by an Introduction and Notes. The volume preserves the lengthy prefatory discussion on the manuscript’s history, authenticity, and the motives behind its Catholic-leaning project, including the German Union efforts and the Hanoverian court's ecumenical endeavors. Russell renders Leibnitz’s Latin text and his notes, offering context on the controversy over Church unity between Catholics and Protestants. The System presents Leibnitz’s theological framework, addressing creation, providence, the Trinity and Incarnation, original and actual sin, justification by faith and charity, and a comprehensive treatment of the Sacraments (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Penance, Extreme Unction, Orders, Matrimony). It also discusses ecclesiastical authority (the papacy and bishops) and the prospects for reconciling confessional differences through reasoned dialogue, mutual concessions, and ecclesiastical councils. The work is a cornerstone for understanding late 17th?century religious debate and the philosophy of religion in Leibnitzian thought.
