Systematic Theology Scripture Defines Scripture Volume 13

The church is not merely a building, a weekly service, or an organization built around shared religious interests. It is the redeemed people of Jesus Christ—gathered under His Word, formed by His grace, equipped for ministry, and sent into the world to make Him known.

In Systematic Theology — Scripture Defines Scripture, Volume 13, Jeff Edwards examines what the Bible teaches about the church’s actual life and mission.

What should happen when the church gathers? How should believers worship, pray, sing, give, serve, care for one another, handle conflict, guard truth, and reach the world with the gospel? What does faithful church life look like when believers face suffering, cultural pressure, false teaching, spiritual weariness, and the continual need to remain ready for Christ’s return?

This volume addresses the church as a worshiping people under the authority of Christ. It explores gathered worship, preaching, prayer, fasting, singing, stewardship, the Lord’s Day, holiness, fellowship, hospitality, pastoral care, mercy, discipleship, and the shared responsibility of every believer to serve within the body.

It also examines the church’s outward calling: evangelism, making disciples, church planting, supporting missions, helping churches in need, caring for the poor, living honorably before civil authorities, and bearing faithful witness when obedience to Christ becomes costly.

The final section turns toward the church’s endurance in the present age. Christians are called to live as pilgrims, remain watchful, pursue holiness, stand firm under pressure, and keep their hope fixed on the return of Jesus Christ.

Written from the conviction that Scripture must define Scripture, this book does not treat church life as a collection of modern preferences, programs, or traditions. It returns repeatedly to the biblical pattern, allowing the Word of God to establish what the church is, how it should live, and what it must remain faithful to until Christ comes.

This volume is part of the 24-volume Systematic Theology — Scripture Defines Scripture series. Each volume works together to build a broad biblical theology, while also standing alone as a focused study of its particular doctrine.

For pastors, teachers, ministry leaders, and believers who want a stronger biblical understanding of worship, fellowship, ministry, mission, mercy, witness, and faithful endurance, this volume offers a Scripture-centered guide to the life Christ calls His church to live.
