Systematic Theology Scripture Defines Scripture Volume 14

What does the Bible actually teach about angels?

In a world filled with fascination about guardian angels, heavenly encounters, spiritual warfare, mysterious beings, and the unseen realm, Christians need more than stories, traditions, speculation, or popular ideas. They need Scripture.

Systematic Theology — Scripture Defines Scripture, Volume 14: The Doctrine of Angels and the Unseen Realm is a thorough biblical study of angelology—the doctrine of angels and the created spiritual realm. Jeff C. Edwards examines what God has revealed about angels from Genesis through Revelation, allowing Scripture to define its own words, images, offices, and boundaries.

This volume explores the heavenly host as created beings; the nature, strength, number, and ministry of angels; cherubim, seraphim, Michael, Gabriel, and the living creatures around God’s throne. It follows angels through the Old Testament, the birth and ministry of Christ, His resurrection and ascension, the life of the early church, the ministry of believers, the return of Christ, the judgments of Revelation, and the glory of the new creation.

Readers will also find careful treatment of difficult and often-misused passages involving:

• guardian angels and “their angels”

• the Angel of the LORD

• Babel, Daniel’s princes, Psalm 82, and the divine council question

• angels and prayer

• angels of the seven churches

• angels at death

• angel worship and modern claims of angelic encounters

• holy angels, angels who sinned, and the limits of Scripture’s revelation

This book takes the unseen realm seriously without constructing doctrines from imagination. It does not deny the reality of angels, reduce them to symbols, or turn them into objects of devotion. Instead, it shows them as Scripture presents them: created servants of God, mighty in strength, obedient to His commands, active in His purposes, and always beneath the authority of Christ.

Angels are real. Their ministry is real. But they are not mediators, saviors, or objects of worship.

They point beyond themselves to the throne of God and the glory of the Lamb.

Part of the 24-volume Systematic Theology — Scripture Defines Scripture series, this book works alongside the complete set while also standing alone as a substantial, Scripture-driven study for pastors, teachers, Bible students, and believers who want to understand what God has truly revealed about angels and the unseen realm.
