T-90M Proryv: From T-90A to Ukraine — Development, Modernization, Combat Service, and Battlefield Adaptation of Russia’s Main Battle Tank (Modern Battlefield Tanks)

Modern armored warfare is decided by far more than armor thickness and gun caliber. Understanding a tank like the T-90M means seeing the complete system around it: the engineering choices, crew workload, industrial capacity, battlefield threats, tactical adaptations, and evidence that reveals what happens when design meets war.

T-90M Proryv — From T-90A to Ukraine takes the reader inside the development, modernization, combat service, and battlefield evolution of Russia’s contemporary main battle tank. Written in the evidence-driven style of the Modern Battlefield Tanks series, Stephen Rowen traces the Proryv from the T-72 and T-90 lineage through the T-90A, T-90AM and T-90MS development path to the vehicle now serving under the pressures of high-intensity warfare.

You will discover:

• How the T-90M became the Proryv — the design decisions, industrial constraints, redesigned turret, protection systems, fire control, powerpack, autoloader, ammunition architecture, and modernization choices that distinguish it from earlier T-90 variants.

• What it means to operate and sustain the tank — the realities of a three-man crew, commander and gunner workload, mobility, maintenance, recovery, production, refurbishment, and the support system required to keep T-90Ms available for combat.

• What battlefield evidence actually reveals — carefully contextualized experience from earlier T-90 operations through Ukraine, including mines, artillery, anti-tank weapons, FPV drones, immobilization, documented losses, survivability, recovery, and the limits of what photographs and combat footage can prove.

• How the T-90M continues to adapt — roof protection, electronic countermeasures, camouflage, signature reduction, field modifications, factory changes, wartime production, and the feedback loop between battlefield experience and Russian armored development.

Along the way, the reader encounters the details that turn a familiar tank into a much deeper story: why reported T-90M production figures require careful interpretation, how older vehicles can re-enter the fleet in substantially different form, why losing mobility can matter as much as defeating armor, and how inexpensive unmanned systems have changed the sequence by which a modern main battle tank can be located, immobilized, attacked, recovered, or lost.

T-90M Proryv is designed to leave the reader with a working understanding of the vehicle rather than a collection of specifications. By the final chapter, the T-90M becomes understandable as engineers, crews, maintainers, factories, logistics networks, tactical units, and battlefield evidence all interacting around the same machine.
