Advertisement at front for "Treatises writ by the same author". And with A COMPLETE KEY TO THE TALE OF A TUB the Fourth Edition published in 1724, followed by AN EXAMINATION OF MR. WOTTON'S REMARKS UPON THE TALE OF A TUB. A TALE OF A TUB is a satire on religion and a parody of contemporary writing on that topicFirst published in 1704, it was the first major work by Jonathan Swift. Full calf. Four raised bands to spine. Spine and covers gilt ruled, with gilt title and ornaments to spine. With frontispiece preceding first two titles, and plates after pages 44, 62, 112, 128, 172, 206. Bears a bookplate on the front pastedown for Myrtle A. Crummer. She was the wife of Dr. Henry Leroy Crummer. She was a well-known literary editor. She and her husband made many trips to Europe to acquire antique medical books and manuscripts, which were willed to the Medical Library at the University of Michigan. Tiny ink marks to margins of pp. 96, 97, 136, and pencil marks to margins in the KEY TO THE TALE and MR. WOTTON?S REMARKS. Otherwise the text block is clean. Sporadic toning, and faded foxing throughout. Joints rubbed. Front and rear hinges starting, but Textblock is tight.
