Born in Devon, Taylor (1871-1963) became known as one of the Great Triumvirate (along with James Braid and Harry Vardon) and a founder of the PGA. He grew up in impoverished cirumstances, his father dying when he was an infant, and he was therefore fored into work at the age of 11. He worked as a caddy and general labourer at Westward Ho! golf course, not far from his home at Northam. Soon afterwards he joined the greenkeeper's staff, a move which laid the foundation for his skill as a course designer later in life. At 19, he turned professional and worked at several clubs before settling at Royal Mid Surrey. Second Edition. 8vo. viii + 328pp. Frontispiece, 41 plates. Original decorative green cloth, gilt vignettes and titles to upper board and spine, head of spine rubbed, upper edge of spine rubbed. Top edges gilt. Ink inscription to front pastedown, dated 1901.
