About this Item
Although this work was published anonymously, Hinckley is listed as the illustrator. Whether or not he also wrote the text is debatable. Unlike many drawing books of the period that focus exclusively on perspective and the empirical side of painting, this one considers contrasting use of color, the formation of figures, etc., with an eye towards creating certain aesthetic effects with one's technique. "[I]llustrated discourse on the principles of drawing including a discussion of form, color, light and shade, invention and design, anatomical proportions of the human figure, perspective, composition, the passions, harmony, symmetry, criticism, and nature, Hinckley also includes a translation of Du Fresnoy's poem, 'The art of painting'" - Schimmelman. "The publisher of this little volume was a bookseller and an importer, dealing in plain and fancy stationery painter's supplies, maps, novels and religious and scientific works. Among the publications advertised in this volume are a child's drawing book of objects and Smith's juvenile drawing book, a small 4°, offered at 88 cents, containing 24 plates of subjects, easily copied; also Coe's drawing book of American scenery, with 34 viewsfrom nature, 4°, $1.50" - Drepperd. A particularly nice copy, in original publisher's binding, of this early American drawing book, treating the contrast of light and shade as well as color. SCHIMMELMAN, AMERICAN IMPRINTS ON ART 259. DREPPERD, AMERICAN DRAWING BOOKS, p.17. Original publisher's green cloth, stamped in blind, spine gilt. Binding lightly rubbed, stained, and soiled. Internally clean and bright. Contemporary bookplate of Benjamin H. Lane to front pastedown. Very good.
