The wide range of security threats confronting Europe, both new and traditional, are addressed in this thorough examination. New forms of nationalism as well as ethnic conflicts, biological and chemical warfare, resource conflicts, pandemics, mass migrations, transnational terrorism, and environmental dangers challenge the ability to safeguard the values upon which European society is based. This book provides theory and empirical case detail on several primary issues while offering up-to-date research on the development of European border control. Considering also the correlation between migration and economic, health, and military conditions, this account also discusses the insecurity of certain destination countries—which can lead to the exploitation of migrants.
J. Peter Burgess is a research professor at the Peace Research Institute in Oslo—where he leads the security program and edits the Security Dialogue journal—and a senior research fellow at the Institute for European Studies at the Vrije Universiteit in Brussels. He is the author of The Ethical Subject of Security: Geopolitical Rationality and the Threat against Europe. Serge Gutwirth is the director of the Law, Science, Technology, and Society Research Group at the Vrije Universiteit as well as a professor of law and holder of a research fellowship in the framework of the VUB-Research Contingent.
