"In the dead of winter" 1873-1874 "Watkins and his friend the landscape painter William Keith decided to collaborate on views seen along the route of the Central Pacific Railroad . [Proceeding without Keith from Salt Lake City] Watkins advanced past Promontory, where the Central Pacific had met the Union Pacific line in 1869, to photograph the desolate track-side sights of Echo Canyon and Weber Canyon . For the first time, employs two special railroad flatcars to carry his photographic wagon, horses, etc." (Palmquist, Carleton Watkins: The Art of Perception, pp. 212; 218).
