TIME AND PLACE

The first monograph on the celebrated California architecture firm known for their elegant and site-specific residences

Time & Place: The Homes of Richard Beard Architects offers an intimate, visually arresting journey through the evolution of one of California’s most compelling architectural voices. This eagerly anticipated monograph bring together eleven extraordinary residences that showcase the breadth of Beard’s practice, from a historic vineyard estate to a restored urban townhouse and dramatic homes set along mountainsides and coastal cliffs.

The firm’s guiding philosophy – that architecture must speak not only through form, but through the human experience of moving through space, inside and out – is evident in every home. More than 175 lush color photographs invite readers to explore each residence in brilliant detail.

Beard’s charming and illuminating texts take the reader from his early influences – Texan craft, Northern California modernism, and Japanese spatial sequencing – through his formative decades of practice and the growth of the firm. What emerges is a portrait of a practice devoted to thoughtful, timeless homes that privilege comfort, intimacy, and a profound sense of belonging.

Richard Beard Architects was founded in 2014 by Richard Beard, FAIA. Connection to setting, reverence for materials, and devotion to functional beauty are all hallmarks of RBA, a practice dedicated to site-specific architecture that integrates the built and natural environments―urban and wild―in ways both graceful and sustainable. RBA projects have been featured in Architectural Digest, Luxe, Homes & Gardens, and House Beautiful among other publications.
