FIRST EDITION 1812. WITH AN OLD INK INSCRIPTION IN A BOLD HAND: "First impressions fr (sic) the Author" on front free endpaper (see image). 4to, approximately 270 x 220 mm, 10¾ x 8¾ inches, engraved frontispiece, full page map of the route plus 7 other full page engraved plates, 1 of mineral specimens with original hand colouring, all plates present as called for in the plate list. Pages: vii, [1]-366, [2], directions to the binder and advert, later half roan over pebbled cloth, gilt lettering and decoration to spine, gilt top edge, marbled endpapers. Spine faded, spine and corners rubbed, pale brown offset to pages opposite plates, including title page, plus a little foxing and occasional small stain to margins, otherwise the text is clean. Light foxing to most plates, slightly heavier on frontispiece, diamond plate and shell plate, small repair to top blank corner of shell plate (see attached images), a few other stains and small ink spots to the diamond and shell plates.
