Quarger-blue publisher's cloth over gray boards, printed label mounted front cover (minor edgewear, slight bumping to corners, minor dustsoiling, inner hinges expertly repaired), still a VG presentation copy from the author to William Figg (1800-1866), well-known Lewes, Sussex surveyor, who includes pencil note corrections on last page. Second edition, revised, of this informative work by the author details the use of the Land Chain, Surveying Cross, Prismatic Compass, Theodolite, Spirit Level, Sextant, Transit Instrument, and others. Simms (1803-1865), a surveyor and civil engineer of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, and formerly with the Ordnance Survey was the son of William Simms (d.1860) scientific instrument maker with Edward Troughton, joined the Southern Eastern Railway Company as resident engineer in 1836, and oversaw the construction of the Bletchingley and Saltwood tunnels.
